Programme for Autonomous Robotics (PAR) Lab.
This page contains basic information about our Programme for Autonomous Robotics (PAR) laboratory at IIT Delhi, which was established in 2010 to conduct research for Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai with generous funding from the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS). About 12 faculty drawn from the departments of Computer Sc. and Eng. (CSE), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Mechanical Engineering (ME) were engaged in five curated projects on autonomous assembly using industrial robots. The challenges were how to integrate camera visions, force/torque sensors, haptics devices to achieve remote assembly operations. The above tasks were successfully achieved and demonstrated to the funding agency.
Some of their videos can be viewed in the following links:

The Lab. also supported other funded projects like the integration of a one-ton motion platform for driving simulation at Simulator Development Division (SDD) in Secunderabad. Academically, PAR Lab. catered the experiments for the robotics course offered by the above departments, besides introducing a specialization for the undergraduate (UG) students of IIT Delhi called Inter-Disciplinary Specialization in Robotics (IDSR). First batch of IDSR graduated in 2018. One Illustrative project by a UG student was Automated Mobile Robot (AMR) using ROS (Robot Operating System). See its video here
Soon after the momentum gathered with the students and faculty in robotics, an institutional Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Biologically Inspired Robots and Drones (BIRD) was formed with four Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDF) to conduct relevant research. Since 2023, CoE-BIRD has been coordinating the newly launched M. Tech programme in Robotics, which is supported by four entities of the institute, namely, the departments of CSE, EE, ME, and the School of AI (ScAI).

In another development, IIT Delhi was awarded in 2020 by the DST, GoI with the Technology Innovation Hub on Cobotics. As per the DST, it operates as a not-for-profit (Section 8) company under the name I-Hub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC) that closely interacts with the BIRD faculty and students in terms investing on their R&D Projects, Start-ups, and has been sponsoring five M. Tech (Robotics) Students.
